Apple is rumored to be working on a foldable iPhone with self-healing screen technology. This innovative feature aims to minimize and repair damages automatically. The technology includes a blend of rigid and flexible display areas, with a special layer for self-healing. This layer uses transparent conductors that can heat up to start the healing process.
Apple has been exploring foldable screen designs for some time. Their goal is not only to create foldable and rollable screens but also to protect them from damage caused by repeated folding or rolling.
A recent patent suggests Apple is developing a self-healing technology for these foldable displays. This technology would allow the screens to “heal” themselves from everyday wear and tear.
Self-Healing Tech for Foldable iPhones
Apple’s new patent, seen by AppleInsider, describes a way to both minimize and fix screen damage. The patent, titled “Electronic Devices With Flexible Display Cover Layers,” proposes using a combination of rigid and flexible sections in the display, along with a self-healing feature.
Apple explains that the display might cover the entire device and be made up of three parts. Two parts would be regular, fixed screens, while the third part would be flexible, connecting the other two. This flexible part would include a layer of elastomer, the material responsible for self-healing.
Similar to how memory foam mattresses return to their original shape when heated, the elastomer layer would use heat to repair itself. Apple claims that this display layer will contain transparent conductors forming a heating layer, which activates the healing process. This can happen in response to user input, on a schedule, or while the device is charging.
The patent doesn’t specify if this technology will be exclusive to foldable iPhones. Apple might use it in other devices, such as laptops, watches, or wearable tech.
With this self-healing feature, Apple aims to bring a new level of durability and innovation to its future devices.
